Misfiring Suarez the butt of Barca jokes before hat-trick

The Uruguay international took his tally to 29 goals in as many games this season with a hat-trick in the champions' 6-0 victory over Ernesto Valverde's side at Camp Nou.

Suarez had failed to find the net this year prior to the game and his team-mates were quick to remind him of it in recent days.

"Strikers go through streaks and I have to say I have laughed with the team at the chances I've missed in recent games, because normally I score those," he said after the match.

Monaco go second, St Etienne close in on top four

 

Goals in the second half from Thomas Lemar and Joao Moutinho secured the three points required by Leonardo Jardim's men to climb above Angers, who were beaten by Nice on Friday night.

Lemar's thumping effort on 53 minutes was adjudged to have crossed the line after rebounding down off the crossbar, while Moutinho found the net four minutes later with a superbly-executed free-kick.

The victory was Monaco's sixth away from home this season, but they still remain 21 points adrift of runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

Juve extend winning run with easy victory

Paulo Dybala struck twice with Sami Khedira and Alex Sandro also finding the net as Massimo Allegri's team closed the gap on league leaders Napoli to just two points.

Dybala has now hit six goals in eight domestic matches for Juve, who are seeking a fifth consecutive Scudetto, although Juve's task was simplified by Danilo's 25th minute red card.

Juve's win spoiled the party for Udinese, who were celebrating the official unveiling of their revamped Friuli stadium.

Mohamed Elneny joins Arsenal

 

Egypt midfielder Mohamed Elneny will need to adapt to the challenges of playing in the Premier League if he is to succeed at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.

Elneny completed the switch from Swiss champions FC Basel on Thursday after making over 90 league appearances and winning three consecutive Super League titles with the club.

Newcastle complete the signing of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea

Newcastle have announced the signing of midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea.

The 23-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half year deal at St. James' Park and joins for a reported £12million fee.

Shelvey has scored nine goals in 77 appearances for Swansea since moving to the Liberty Stadium from Liverpool for £5m in July 2013.

But his future has been in doubt since Garry Monk's departure and a move looked increasingly likely.

Shelvey told the club's official website: "I'm very excited to be here. I'm so glad that it's finally done.

"I drove up through the night to be here so it's been a manic 24 hours but it's all been worth it to come here and play for this great club."

Liverpool complete Steven Caulker loan signing in time for defender to face Arsenal

Liverpool have announced the loan signing of QPR centre-back Steven Caulker.

Manager Jurgen Klopp was keen to bring in defensive reinforcements this month after hamstring injuries to Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren left him short of options.

A deal for the 24-year-old, who had been on loan at Southampton, was finalised swiftly and the paperwork submitted ahead of the noon deadline, meaning he is eligible for selection to face Arsenal on Wednesday.

Caulker is expected to train with his new team-mates on Tuesday afternoon after travelling from London.

Joey Barton netted his first goal for the Clarets early on before forwards Sam Vokes and Andre Gray added to the score sheet. Former Aston Villa defender Matt Lowton added to the tally as he coolly smash home George Boyd’s low cross.
