John Cena successfully underwent surgery on Jan. 7 to repair injuries in his right shoulder, WWE.com can confirm. The procedure was performed by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala.
“He had a complete tear of a small portion of the rear rotator cuff tendon, the infraspinatus — toward the top-back of his shoulder — which I repaired,” Dr. Dugas told WWE.com. “Also, there was a large piece of loose tissue in his shoulder that needed to be removed.”Additionally, Dr. Dugas addressed deterioration that had occurred in Cena’s AC joint.
The surgical procedure took about one hour. Now on the road to recovery, Cena will be working on range of motion before bearing weight on his shoulder.
“The first hurdle is getting the cuts to heal and getting cartilage to form over the defect,“ Dugas said. “After that, we’ll get back to function.”
